Ms. Wiens,

How does HIV not follow the rules of Central Dogma?

Do we have to know all 7 experiments from the history of DNA? What kind of short answer question could you ask us about those experiments?

Human Immunodeficiency Virus is a type of retrovirus, which is at odds to the Central Dogma of genetics due to its use of the unique enzyme, Reverse Transcriptase. This enzyme creates a complementary single-straded DNA copy of the RNA of HIV. Furthermore, the single-stranded DNA is then converted into double-stranded DNA through the same process. This is at odds to the Central Dogma as it goes against the idea that Genetic information only has one direction of flow, from DNA to RNA to Polypeptide. In this case, RNA reverses the processes of transcription by creating a new, complementary strand of DNA, which is the point that is at odds with the dogma.

Jason has a beautiful answer to the first question. As for the second question I have already told you enough and will not give a more specific question other than what I said today in class.
